Corrective Hair Color: What It Is, What It Costs, and What to Expect
Corrective color is some of the most technically demanding work I do at Tim's Teazz — and it's also some of the most rewarding. When a client comes in with hair that's been damaged by a bad salon visit, a box dye gone wrong, or a DIY experiment that didn't go as planned, the goal is always the same: get them to a beautiful, healthy result as safely and efficiently as possible. Here's what you need to know before you book a corrective color appointment.
What is corrective color? Corrective color is any service designed to fix a color result that didn't go as intended. That might mean removing unwanted brassiness from a blonde that went orange, evening out patchy or uneven color, lifting out box dye that deposited too dark, or repairing hair that was over-processed and needs to be rebuilt before any new color can be applied. Every corrective color situation is different, which is why a thorough consultation is always the first step.
How long does it take? Corrective color appointments are almost always longer than standard color services — sometimes significantly longer. Depending on the severity of the issue and the desired result, a corrective appointment can take anywhere from 3 to 6 hours or more. I always tell clients to clear their schedule and come in with realistic expectations. Rushing a corrective service is how you end up with damaged hair or a result that still doesn't look right.
What does it cost? Corrective color is priced by the time and product required, not by a flat service rate. Because every situation is different, I give a price estimate after the consultation — not before. What I can tell you is that corrective color is almost always more expensive than a standard color service, and in some cases it requires multiple appointments to achieve the final result safely. I know that's not what everyone wants to hear, but it's the honest answer.
Can all color be corrected? Most color issues can be significantly improved, but not all of them can be fully corrected in a single appointment — and some situations require managing expectations about what's achievable without causing further damage. If your hair has been severely over-processed, the priority is rebuilding its health before attempting any additional color work. I'll always tell you honestly what's possible and what the realistic timeline looks like.
